Studio Rules/Monitor Handbook
EMERGENCY INFORMATION
- Use the studio phone to Dial 911. The studio address is on the phone.
- Someone should be sent outside to the parking lot to direct EMTS to the studio.
- A First Aid kit is located just outside the studio on the wall in the hallway.
- A defibrillator is located inside the Fiesta room on the wall.
- Fire extinguishers are located to the left of the outside auto-open door and in the hall outside the studio under the first aid kit.
STUDIO ETIQUETTE
The studio is for the use of SRAL members only, and we are responsible for its general care.
- All who use or visit the studio should sign-in on the log at the podium.
- No spray finishes or adhesives are to be used in the studio.
- No regular turpentine or mineral spirits are to be used anywhere in the studio. Use Gamasol or Turpenoid.
- Artists using solvents, such as Gamasol or Turpenoid, should do so in the back two rooms, which are equipped with special exhaust fans.
- Personal solvent containers should remain closed except when dipping into the solvent.
- Paper towels and rags that have solvents or oil paint on them should be taken home or disposed of in the red Oily Waste Can, please DO NOT THROW THEM IN THE TRASH.
- Use the blue buckets provided for dirty acrylic water and the Waste Solvent containers for solvents.
- Only watercolor water can go down the drain.
- Do not use the kitchen sink for disposal of dirty water or cleaning brushes. The kitchen sink is for food and dishes only.
- Tables should be covered with plastic covers with “THIS SIDE UP” up when painting.
- Clean up your spills.
- Easels and furniture should be returned to proper locations when you are through painting.
- Coffee and tea are provided for your pleasure; however, we ask that you contribute your share in the container provided. Wash, dry and store in cupboards any cup, plate or flatware you use.
- Feel free to use the refrigerator to store your lunch and beverage, but please remove all food by Friday, since anything left inside will be disposed of by the monitor.
- The studio phone is for SRAL business. Answer phone by saying “Santa Rita Art League Studio, this is________”. If a personal call is necessary, please keep it short.
- The copier may be used by members for personal copies, but copies should be paid for in the donation can next to the copier. Be sure to tally all copies made.
In addition to the above Guidelines, monitors need to check the STUDIO RULES and be familiar with their duties (see MONITOR INSTRUCTIONS below).

MONITOR INSTRUCTIONS
There must always be a monitor present when the studio is open.
- Monitors need to check the monitor book and be familiar with their duties.
- Monitor guidelines and rules should be posted.
- Copies of SRAL brochures should be available. If there are none, contact the Membership Chairman.
- Master copies of the Book and DVD sign-up sheets, SRAL membership applications, and various show applications are in the black filing cabinet. The copier can be used to reproduce these as needed.
- Request everyone sign in at the podium.
- Welcome visitors and give them information about SRAL. Invite GVR members to join SRAL. Applications are on desk. Membership fee is $25/year.
- Answer visitors questions and refer to studio rules (in Monitor Book on desk).
- First time Studio users should be given a copy of the Studio Etiquette.
- Keep in mind, the phone is for SRAL business. Keep personal calls short and to a minimum.
- Answer the phone saying:
“Santa Rita Art League, this is____, how may I help you?” - Be sure plastic table covers are used when painting.
- Direct artists to blue buckets under sink for disposal of acrylic water, the sealed containers labeled “Waste Solvent” on the counters next to the sinks for disposal of solvents and the red Oily Waste Can for disposal of rags and paper towels containminated with solvent or oil paint.
- Direct oil painters to the back rooms if they are using solvents.
- Inform the custodian if any of the dispensers are out of paper towels, acrylic buckets, Waste Solvent containers or the Oily Waste Can are full, there are leaks, any lights are burned out or there are other building problems.
- If at any time you become uncomfortable or afraid, call 911 or a board member as appropriate.
- When monitoring, bring a project, art, a book, and/or maybe a friend. It will make your time in the studio more fun and probably more productive. You are not expected to sit at the desk, just be available to greet visitors.
Opening/Morning Monitor
- Morning hours are from 9:00AM to 12:30PM.
- Unlock Studio at the gate and turn on lights.
- Ensure the exhaust fan in the back right-hand room is on.
- Unlock the outside auto-open door by pressing in on the crash bar and using the key hanging beside the door to depress the button in the handle near the hinge side. This should lock the crash bar in a depressed position.
- Put studio sign out where it can be easily seen.
- If not on, turn on coffee maker.
- If desired, make coffee.
- Afternoon hours are from 12:30PM to 4:00PM.
- If there is no one else in the studio and it is late afteroon you do not need to remain, you can lock up early and go home.
- Clean coffee maker and carafes, turn off coffee maker.
- If it is Friday, discard perishable food in the refrigerator.
- Bring in studio sign.
- Ensure window in back right-hand room is closed and locked.
- Turn off lights but make sure the exhaust fan in the back right-hand room stays on.
- Lock the outside auto-open door by using the key hanging beside the door to depress the button in the hole in the handle near the hinge side. This will cause the button to pop up and the crash bar to pop out.
- Lock Studio and place the keys in the lock box.
- Verify the outside auto-open door is locked.
